About The Artist

ARTIST STATEMENT: The art of Oren Lyons is represented in museums and collections across the country, including the Smithsonian Institution. He has a B.A. of Fine Arts from Syracuse University Class of '58. He pursued a professional career in New York City in the 60's in Advertising, Graphics, Illustration and was an Art and Planning Director for Norcrosse Greeting Cards. He continues to paint in between his duties as a Chief and Professor of American History at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Chief Lyons was an athlete in his own right. He was All-American Lacrosse position of goalie 1957-58, and was a teammate of another famous athlete, Jim Brown. Together they contributed to the first Syracuse University undefeated lacrosse team in 1957. Chief Lyons is in five Athletic Halls of Fame including the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He is the Chairman of the Iroquois Nationals Lacrosse Team that won the Bronze Medal in the Under 19 Men's World Games in Adelaide, Australia 1999. His most satisfactory recognition and honor he says is the Iroquois Nationals winning the First Annual Jim Thorpe Award for Native American Athlete of the Year, 1999.top back |
