Nuclear Free

Nuclear Free Zones
We promote the passage of nuclear free zone (NFZ) laws by tribal governments to prevent the acceptance of high-level radioactive waste in Indian Country.
NFZs offer a legal avenue for tribal governments to assert their sovereign rights to block unwanted nuclear facilities.
Bringing together Native American activists, environmentalists, local tribal, and neighboring non-Indian governmental officials, we're developing a grassroots counter-movement to the well-funded efforts of the nuclear industry.
We emphasize the link between the creation of nuclear waste and its disposal, demonstrating that ending production is the safest and best alternative.

Tribes that are not shown but that have already declared their lands a Nuclear Free Zone (NFZ) should send their declaration to the National Environmental Coalition of Native Americans, so they may be included in this rapidly growing list.
At 109 nuclear power plants across the nation, 30,000 tons of high level radioactive waste is pilling up and this figure is likely to double by 2010.
